About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (Vol. XXII, No. 280, May 29, 1889) features the opening serial "Keno Kit's New Role" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, continuing the adventures of Dead Shot Dandy. The plot concerns Duke Decatur, aka Dead Shot Dandy, a scout at Fort Blank accused of murder and robbery. Despite rendering valuable service to the military, he faces execution and spurns a pardon offer from Colonel Du Barry. In a parallel narrative, Lulu Dale—a woman disguised as a boy seeking to avenge her father's death—arrives at the fort after being rescued by Dead Shot Dandy from Indians, unaware of his identity. Marie Du Barry, the Colonel's daughter, defends Decatur's innocence, having previously freed him from execution. Lulu vows to pursue justice for her father's murder, though she concedes she must determine Decatur's actual guilt before acting. The narrative interweaves frontier action, romantic tension, and mystery surrounding Decatur's true nature and criminal associations.
