The story follows two parallel narratives in the Mexican frontier: Pedro Felipe, a Mexican scout driven by gold fever, travels to the haunted "Land of Silence" to find treasure after previously rescuing his master's daughter from bandits. Simultaneously, Joel Wheeler's small immigrant wagon train, guided by Tim Simpson, travels northward with his daughter Christina ("Kissie"), a spirited eighteen-year-old, and foreman Samuel Carpenter. When Kissie pursues a jack-rabbit and becomes separated from camp, she finds herself lost on the prairie. Spotting what she initially believes are rescuers approaching—but counts thirteen mounted figures instead of her party's seven—she realizes hostile Apaches are pursuing her across the darkening desert.
