About this issue

This 1884 Beadle and Adams dime novel serial features "Glass-Eye, the Great Shot of the West" by Captain J.F.C. Adams. The opening chapter, "A Ride for Life," follows Rosa Beckwith, who becomes lost on the prairie after riding from her father's wagon-train. Pursued by a Sioux warrior on horseback who throws a lasso around her, Rosa flees desperately on her black stallion Saladin. The warrior suddenly falls dead under mysterious circumstances—shot by an unseen marksman. A white frontiersman subsequently appears, introducing the titular character Glass-Eye, identified as an expert rifleman. The narrative combines western adventure with elements of danger and rescue, establishing the framework for the serialized story.
