About this issue

This serialized story by Edward Willett, titled "Featherweight, the Boy Spy; or, Dutch Derman in the Mountains," appears in a Beadle and Adams publication from 1873. The narrative combines adventure and intrigue set in the Ozark Mountains of southwestern Missouri. The protagonist is Featherweight (Fred Light), a young spy who, assisted by his German companion Herman, discovers the hidden mountain lair of Ozark Alf and his gang by scaling a treacherous cliff and crawling through a narrow cave passage. Meanwhile, Ozark Alf receives his father, Alfred Creswell from Memphis, who urges him to capture Alf's cousin Sophie, who has eloped with Frank Mallory. Alf resists, reluctant to complicate his outlaw operations, which he maintains as a post-Civil War enterprise.
