The narrative then shifts to New York, introducing Doctor De Payster, an impoverished physician living in a decrepit Dutch mansion near Chatham Square, whose only treasure is his beautiful sixteen-year-old daughter Stella. A stormy March night sets the stage for emerging complications as the doctor's domestic solitude is interrupted.
