About this issue

"Wind River Clark: The Gold Hermit" by Leon Lewis depicts a frontier scene where a weathered man gestures urgently toward a woman beside a saddled horse, with mountains and a cabin in the background. The wood-engraved illustration captures the pulp adventure formula: danger, romance, and the untamed West. Beadle's Dime Library, published weekly at ten cents a copy, epitomized the cheap serials that flooded America in the late 19th century. These woodpulp magazines—featuring adventure, crime, and the supernatural—reached working-class readers and directly pioneered the sensational storytelling conventions that comic books would adopt and amplify in the 1930s onward.
