About this issue

This serial by Joseph E. Badger Jr. depicts a dramatic race-track narrative. Gambler Mayo Preston stakes his final fortune on the bay mare Dixie, ridden by the famous "Jockey Jap," during a major race meet. When Dixie initially leads, Preston's hopes rise, but as The White Ghost closes in, tension mounts. Near the finish, Dixie inexplicably swerves into The White Ghost, committing interference. The judges place Dixie tenth and award the race to The White Ghost. Preston, witnessing what he believes is a fixed race, accuses horse owner Clifford Carpenter of orchestrating the loss. After a thief steals his pocketbook during the race commotion (later recovered), Preston confronts Carpenter and strikes him, claiming Carpenter sold the race and stole his money. Carpenter denies the accusations and warns Preston they will settle accounts later.
