About this issue

"Dashing Charlie's Double" and "The Old Miner's Legacy," both appearing in this August 1896 Beadle and Adams weekly, exemplify late-19th-century pulp adventure. "The Old Miner's Legacy," serialized by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, follows Dashing Charlie—a renowned Northern plains scout, Indian-fighter, and guide—who volunteers to undertake a perilous errand for dying miner Matt Markham. Previous messengers have been killed by outlaws, Comanches, and Mexican bandits, or captured. Markham must find someone to deliver a message and discover a hidden gold fortune before his death. The narrative shifts to Markham's backstory: in Virginia, he and his brother Dick both loved the beautiful sixteen-year-old heiress Beatrice Gibbs. When her mansion catches fire on Christmas night, Dick rescues her and becomes her betrothed, prompting the narrator's descent into hatred and attempted murder of his brother via rifle accident. The serialized narrative structure breaks abruptly mid-sentence, continuing next issue.
