About this issue

"Scoop," by Capt. Howard Holmes, is a serialized circus melodrama appearing in this 1896 Beadle and Adams dime novel issue. The story follows Joe Vincent, a young acrobat training for the Great American Circus, who becomes suspicious about the mysterious financial backer funding the show. After shadowing his associate George Farrell, Vincent learns through a street boy named Buttons that the backer is eccentric millionaire Harold Hart, a former racing enthusiast. Vincent receives a mysterious letter signed "Climax" proposing a business partnership. Simultaneously, Hart is visited by a desperate little man named Nathan Moneybox, who demands ten thousand dollars under threat of exposure, a request Hart seemingly grants. The narrative interweaves circus preparation, financial intrigue, and blackmail scheming with hints of darker secrets involving a figure called "the Man in Blue."
