About this issue

This serialized pulp adventure by Jos. E. Badger Jr., published in Beadle and Adams Weekly (1896), opens with a frontier chase across the prairie. Anderson Filley and his seventeen-year-old son Maurice flee mounted Sioux warriors pursuing scalps after the Rosebud conflict. As their exhausted horses weaken under sustained gunfire, Anderson forces Maurice to ride ahead alone toward their home to warn his wife and daughter, then positions himself for a last stand against overwhelming odds. Meanwhile, an observer named Walter Wheeler witnesses the distant chase through field-glasses from rocky high ground. Recognizing the fugitive's desperate situation, Wheeler mounts his white stallion and begins moving strategically to intercept the pursuit. The narrative emphasizes period-appropriate frontier violence, desperate family separation, and Wheeler's emergence as the titled hero intervening in the tragedy unfolding across the plains.
