This December 1895 Beadle & Adams dime novel features "Silver Sam, the Shasta Sport: or, Dan Duncan's Desperate Device" by George C. Jenks. The serial opens with a stagecoach traversing a treacherous California mountain road, driven by coachman Bill Long. When a washout threatens catastrophe on a narrow cliff pass, Long executes a desperate leap with his team. At the Bull Canyon hotel, a dapper young man reveals himself as "Silver Sam of Shasta," a reputed gunfighter who intimidates a rough passenger named Mark Hinckley. Silver Sam reunites with Alma Moore, a woman desperate for his aid: her young son was kidnapped two years prior. Sam pledges to recover the boy, having apparently uncovered a lead connected to a recent stagecoach holdup. The story combines Western adventure with mystery and melodrama elements.
