About this issue

The Gold-Button Sport of Sulphur Bar by Albert W. Aiken, serialized in this 1895 issue of Beadle's Weekly, presents an adventure tale set in Utah mining country. The story follows Harry Gordon, a card sharp nicknamed the Gold-Button Sport for his distinctive jacket trimmed with golden bell buttons. After being cleaned out by military officers at Fort Cameron, Gordon travels to the mining camp of Sulphur Bar seeking fortune. En route, he defeats a desperate road agent through martial skill. Upon arrival in town, Gordon encounters Mickey McGinniss, a bellicose miner who demands newcomers fight him. Accepting the challenge for a wager, Gordon demonstrates scientific boxing technique, outmaneuvering his larger opponent and establishing himself in the camp. The narrative emphasizes the protagonist's courtly manner, quick wit, and physical prowess as he attempts to rebuild his gambling fortune.
