About this issue

This issue of a dime novel or pulp magazine features "Riata Rob, the Range Champion," by Jos. B. Badger Jr., serialized in the May 1, 1895 issue. The story concerns Robert Runnoyer, a skilled ranchman who has won the Range Champion title for two consecutive years in cowboy sporting competitions. Rob is betrothed to Sybil Parry, though her brother Felix opposes the match due to Rob's Mexican-Indian mother. Rob must decide whether to compete in the upcoming festival—his final chance to prove himself—or abandon it on Sybil's behalf. The narrative depicts the lovers riding across the prairie and performing a dangerous leap across a barranca on horseback. When pursuing horsemen (Felix and Owen Taylor) approach, Sybil deliberately leaps the chasm; Rob follows despite crumbling rock, barely escaping death. The story combines romantic tension with western adventure and hints at brewing complications from family opposition and Taylor's sinister presence.
