About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (December 17, 1879, No. 83) contains a serialized story by William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill). "The Double Tragedy" (Chapter I) depicts a mountain cabin scene where a dark-bearded miner and a beautiful eighteen-year-old woman live in the Colorado Rockies. When Clarence Gilmore arrives with armed men seeking the woman, Victorine, the miner refuses to surrender her. During the confrontation, Gilmore orders his men to shoot; the miner is wounded. Despite the miner's threat to kill Victorine himself rather than let her be taken, Gilmore presses forward. The miner kills Victorine, then Gilmore hangs the dying man from a tree. In Chapter III, "The Knights of the Overland," miners await a stagecoach at Golden City station. The coach arrives late, driven by a stranger; the regular driver is dead, killed by outlaws called "Captain Satan" and his "Overland Knights" gang during a robbery. Passengers include a trembling fat man and an elegant, sad young woman under twenty.
