About this issue

This issue features "The Mystery of the Crewless Craft of Burling Slip," by Harold Payne, a detective serial. Detective Thaddeus Burr investigates a mysterious old man—called "the Shadow" by Greenwich Village neighbors—who inhabits an abandoned house. After interviewing a dwarf doorman, Burr encounters the same old man at a crime scene on Burling Slip, where a well-dressed man has been recently murdered. Though the victim's jewelry remains, Burr suspects the old man's involvement based on his suspicious demeanor. When confronted, the old man flees into the rainy darkness. Burr pursues but loses him, eventually overhearing voices from a doorway. The narrative combines urban detective mystery with Gothic atmosphere, featuring murder investigation and criminal intrigue set in contemporary New York locations.
