About this issue

This 1894 Beadle and Adams dime novel features "Buffalo Bill's Winning Hand; Or, The Masked Woman of the Colorado Canyon" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The serial opens in an English prison death cell where Villers Tremain, a condemned man with a reckless past, is visited by a mysterious veiled woman claiming to be his mother. She reveals a scheme: Tremain resembles the missing Captain Trevor De Villers, heir to an English estate. She arranges his escape and sends him to Arizona to find and eliminate De Villers, after which Tremain can assume his identity and claim both the title and the wealthy Lady May Melvilie. The narrative shifts to Arizona's Colorado Canyon, where Tremain meets "Golden Hair," a golden-haired figure in buckskin—revealed to be a woman—who guides him through the wilderness. She commands a camp of allied Indians near Jacob's Pool, serving as Tremain's companion in this frontier adventure.
