About this issue

Harold Payne's Detective Burr serial in this December 1893 Beadle and Adams dime novel presents two related mysteries. Detective Burr investigates a Wall Street bank robbery and murder at Dodd, Myers & Co. The assistant cashier is found shot dead in the locked cash-room; three hundred thousand dollars are missing from the safe, which shows no signs of forced entry. Only the president and cashier possessed the combination. Burr discovers a scratch on the safe's knob made by a ring—the president wears a distinctive diamond ring. Investigation reveals anonymous letters accusing a bank employee named Dawson of reckless gambling and heavy losses. The case centers on determining whether the cashier or president committed the crime, complicated by the mysterious presence of the murdered assistant cashier in the restricted room.
