About this issue

This 1898 Beadle and Adams publication (ten cents, published Wednesdays) features "The Coast-Raider's Death-Chase: Captain Le Roy's Double," a serialized maritime adventure by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, subtitled "A Story of 'The Pirate Patrol.'" The opening chapters introduce Faustine Fairfax, a nineteen-year-old Southern belle residing in Bay Ridge, New York, who recognizes the captain of a mysterious rakish schooner named The Bother entering New York Harbor. The vessel outpaces an entire fleet in a remarkable sailing display. Faustine's shock stems from identifying the captain as Redfield Romer, whom she believed dead or allied with West Indian outlaws—a man she rejected as unworthy. Her father, planter Duncan Fairfax, arrives that evening aboard the clipper Dauntless, mentioning the suspicious schooner's peculiar behavior during their voyage from the Gulf, including strange nocturnal maneuvering. The narrative establishes intrigue around the vessel's true purpose and Romer's intentions in appearing at Faustine's uncle's estate near the anchored schooner.
