Buffalo Bill's Brand: The Brimstone Brotherhood by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, serialized in this October 19, 1898 issue of Beadle and Adams's weekly dime novel. The narrative centers on Buffalo Bill's daring infiltration of a Sioux encampment surrounding an besieged Army commissary train. After disguising himself entirely as a Sioux chief—complete with war paint, braided hair, feathers, and hidden weapons—Cody penetrates the Indian lines by impersonating a peaceful chief named Red Rabbit. He locates and subdues the guard watching the horses of the assembled chiefs, steals the prized mount of the white renegade leader "Snow Face," and flees toward the fort carrying his captive. The scout's plan involves reaching the fort to summon relief before the Indians intensify their assault on Captain Kennerley's train.
