About this issue

This issue of Golden Feather (October 8, 1879) features the opening installment of "The Mysterious Spy; or, Golden Feather, The Buccaneer's Daughter" by Arthur M. Grainger. Set in autumn 1813 near the Hudson River, the narrative follows Rosalie Lee, an innkeeper's daughter of exceptional beauty and virtue, waiting on a bridge over Spuyten Duyvel Creek for her brother Robert's return. Robert arrives by boat with a stranger—a tall, fair-haired young man of foreign bearing—whom he has helped escape. The stranger, addressing himself as a captain, expresses gratitude for his rescue, though Robert displays jealous possessiveness toward Rosalie. The narrative combines romantic elements with espionage intrigue, detailed landscape description, and period-specific Hudson River Valley setting.
