About this issue

This issue features two stories from Beadle & Adams' dime novel series. "Caging the Tenderloin Tigers" introduces Detective Dan Downing, known as "Double-Voice Dan," a skilled private investigator and master of disguise who has returned to detective work. Three criminals—Game Gus (a gambler), Dandy Dave Fuller (the Masher), and Tom Duke (the Slugger)—discuss at Murdock's, a disreputable saloon on Sixth Avenue near Twenty-third Street in New York, their concern about Downing's intention to capture their criminal gang. The gang considers hiring Bob Sleek, a crooked detective, to spy on Downing. Meanwhile, a sailor arrives at the saloon—revealed to be Downing in disguise—who witnesses their conversation. A second narrative strand involves Harold St. Clair, a well-dressed gentleman, confronting Broadway Bob, a rounder, in the saloon, leading to a brawl. The second story, "Broadway Bob, the Rounder," appears to continue from this confrontation.
