About this issue

"A Romance of the Pard Rivals on the Texas Border" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham depicts the rescue and romantic entanglement of two rival military cadets. When a yacht capsizes on the Hudson near West Point, Cadet Captain Cecil Seldon dives into icy waters to rescue Louise Layton and her father, Major Layton. His lifelong friend and rival, Cadet Godfrey Granger, assists in the rescue, but afterward grows mysteriously distant toward Seldon. Seldon visits Villa Enders to inquire after the rescued party's health and encounters Louise, initiating a growing attachment. However, anticipating imminent civil war, Seldon attempts to resign from the Academy, feeling honor-bound to side with his native Tennessee. Though the commandant persuades him to remain pending war's outbreak, tension escalates between the cadets as Louise shows clear preference for Seldon at a subsequent Academy ball, prompting jealousy from both Godfrey Granger and Eugene Enders, the careless young sailor.
