About this issue

This serial by Albert W. Aiken, from the November 9, 1892 issue, is a frontier adventure centered on a Mexican outlaw band called the Hawks of Cababi. The captain leads an organized gang of approximately thirty men—Mexicans, half-breeds, and Americans—from a hidden mountain camp in Sonora near the Arizona border. A young, handsome Mexican cavalry officer in appearance, he is actually the bandit leader Fernando Bernal. After visiting the provincial governor and Colonel Jose de Janos in disguise to assess Mexican military strength, Bernal returns to his camp with plans to divide and defeat the colonel's regiment through false reports while simultaneously targeting a wealthy estate in Arizona for robbery. The narrative emphasizes the outlaws' sophistication and the incompetence of Mexican officials, establishing tension between organized banditry and corrupt military authority.
