About this issue

This issue contains the opening chapters of "The Still Hunt of the Hills: The Story of the Robber of the Rio Grande," serialized by Col. Prentiss Ingraham. The narrative follows Sister Felicite and young Nina De Sutro crossing Mexico toward a convent in Mexico City. When their carriage becomes trapped fording the swollen Rio Grande and their driver drowns, a mysterious masked horseman rescues them with a lasso. Months later, at a grand tournament in Mexico City, the Unknown "Cavalier of the Rio Grande"—masked and unidentified—systematically defeats all champions across multiple contests: bull-fighting, shooting, riding, swordsmanship with sword and lasso. The climax features a duel with Major Delano, a renowned officer, where the Unknown's sword pierces the Major's heart, though the exact circumstances remain unexplained. The text breaks off mid-explanation as the Unknown unmasks himself before the judges.
