The Deserter Desperado's Defiance This serial by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham features Buffalo Bill, Surgeon Frank Powell ("White Beaver"), Texas Jack Omohundro, and Trapper Dennis operating in Indian territory. The narrative opens with the rescue of white captives from Sioux imprisonment. Surgeon Powell releases Don Eduardo Vincente, a renegade American posing as a Mexican gentleman and leader of "The Deserters" outlaw band, in exchange for Vincente's confession that a prairie waif named Madge Burton is the lost heir sought by English gentlemen. Vincente departs with threats of vengeance. The story shifts to a young woman on a Texas ranch receiving word that Captain Carlos Leon faces execution for conspiracy. She summons a Texas rancher, requesting he save Leon's life, despite his being her rival in romance.
