About this issue

"The Red-skin Sea Rover: A Romance of the Gulf," by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, is a serialized adventure narrative set in the Gulf waters. The story follows a woman and her nine-year-old son, Reginald, aboard a plantation lugger commanded by Belt, a mixed-race Indian sailing master. When the crew spots a dismasted slave ship in distress during a storm, they discover it holds enslaved Africans below deck. Jocko, an experienced black swimmer and crew member, volunteers to swim to the wreck through violent seas to relay news of rescue. Upon boarding, he discovers the slave ship's entire white crew has perished, swept away in the tempest. The woman insists on boarding the wreck herself to assess the situation, demonstrating her commitment to aiding the enslaved people aboard. The narrative combines maritime adventure with the encounter of a disabled slave vessel and its human cargo.
