About this issue

"The Midshipman Rover: A Romance of 1812" by Ned Buntline continues serialized in this weekly publication. The narrative opens with Captain Brent of the frigate War-Cloud preparing to sail from Boston to the Asiatic station. When his son, Midshipman Harry Brent, returns from shore without the able seaman Long Tom Breeze—whom he refused to retrieve because Breeze's wife was dying—the captain publicly denounces him as a coward. In a fit of rage, Captain Brent orders the sentinel and then attempts to shoot his own departing son; Lieutenant Neville intervenes, preventing murder. Harry rows ashore and visits Tom Breeze's home, where he finds the sailor grieving over his dead wife, Louise, and her newborn child. Harry comforts Tom and the infant, vowing lifelong friendship and assistance, while both men face disgrace as logged deserters.
