About this issue

This Beadle & Adams Dime Library installment features "The Black Hills," a dramatic romance by Frank Dumont, presented complete in one number. The narrative opens with a stagecoach robbery in the Dakota Black Hills by masked outlaws led by "Wide-Awake." Among the passengers are gray-haired Mr. Gordon and his beautiful eighteen-year-old daughter Nellie. When Gordon recognizes the masked bandit chief despite his disguise, he is struck down; Nellie is abducted. Wide-Awake—revealed as a man Nellie rejected in Chicago for his gambling associations—spirits her to a hidden glen bandit camp where he declares his intention to force her marriage. Chinese emigrant Wah Sing, who fled the coach, accidentally discovers the camp while hiding in a tree and is captured and imprisoned. Meanwhile, miles away, young Richard Maxwell and his aged African servant Glory, traveling through storm-dark ravines, search for Maxwell's gold claims. Maxwell, a displaced Southern plantation heir, arrived in Custer City seeking fortune to rebuild his lost estate, accompanied by his devoted retainer from childhood.
