About this issue

by J. C. Cowdrick This detective serial centers on Prentiss Kinworth ("Lightning Flash"), a renowned private detective working for Howard Kinworth & Co. in San Francisco. Summoned to the residence of the wealthy widow Mrs. Milburn on Nob Hill, Kinworth learns of an extraordinary commission: to uncover the mystery of her first twenty-six years. Mrs. Milburn recounts how she was admitted to Dr. Hubbler's private insane asylum in San Francisco twenty-six years prior, identified as "Mrs. Abington," supposedly bereaved and partially mad. After recovery, she became a music teacher, eventually marrying her employer Morgan Milburn and remaining with him fifteen years until his recent death. Now wealthy, she seeks to discover her true identity and past. Her fragmented memories contain only shadowy outlines—a name "Whitford," a white-haired elderly man's face, and recurring visions of a child and husband. Everything points toward New York, though she claims no recollection of ever visiting there. Kinworth accepts the case, prepared to pursue leads across the continent.
