About this issue

"The Grand Coup at Paradise Gulch: A Romance of Silverland" by Lieutenant A. K. Sims. This Western serial follows Edith Nettleton, capable manager of her father's Colorado ranch after his mental decline from a riding accident two years prior. When Edith attempts to break a wild coal-black stallion named Ebon, the animal bolts toward a canyon with her clinging to its mane. Ranch foreman Kenneth "Prince" Primrose—a cultured gentleman beneath his rough exterior—pursues on horseback and ropes the stallion moments before it plunges into the chasm, saving Edith from certain death. Despite the danger, she insists on remounting and ultimately subdues the horse. The narrative then transitions to a fandango (Mexican dance celebration) at the ranch, attended by cowboys, miners, Mexicans, and local citizens, where romantic tension between Edith and the devoted Primrose appears to deepen.
