About this issue

The Gladiators of Jack's Delight is a serialized story by Wm. H. Manning appearing in this 1889 issue of Beadle and Adams weekly. Set in the Idaho mining town of Jack's Delight, it concerns factional political conflict between rival groups called the Blacks (respectable citizens led by Mayor Elijah Nicholson and Judge Abram Brackett) and the Reds (rough miners and laborers). The Reds, having received no political recognition, formally resolve to demand the mayoral office through their candidate Nathan Bradley, threatening violence if their demands are not met. In Chapter I, Bradley leads a committee to approach Judge Brackett for support, mentioning a secret about the judge's blind daughter Alice. Brackett refuses to interfere in elections or make political bargains. In Chapter II, Brackett rejects their intimidating resolutions, warning Bradley to abandon violent rhetoric. Johnson threatens bloodshed, while Bradley hints at private leverage to compel Brackett's cooperation.
