About this issue

This installment of Jackson Knox's detective serial "The Matchless Detective's Swell Job" features Major Jack Falconbridge, the "Falcon Detective," investigating a violent crime aboard the Cosmopolitan Express. Express messenger Harry Borden is stabbed in the back aboard a moving train departing New York, and a $10,000 package vanishes. The attacker is believed to be a woman seen with Borden just before his injury. Though Borden's wife Susie was initially suspected—she visited him in the express car moments before departure—Falconbridge privately doubts her guilt despite circumstantial evidence. When detectives Falconbridge and Latham inform the Borden household in Yorkville of the crime, they find Susie and her sister Fanny at home with their servant Janet and lodger Frank Parsons. Susie's genuine shock and distress suggest innocence, yet tensions mount as Latham prevents her planned departure to Stamford.
