About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' pulp magazine (Vol. XLI, No. 533, January 9, 1889) features the opening installment of "The Best Men of Brace Box" by William R. Eyster, author of "Hair Trigger Tom" and other western tales. The serial follows Oregon, a scarred stranger who arrives in the frontier town of Brace Box to assess its notable men: Solid Sam, Cold Card, Colonel Rollins, and the mysterious Paul Morrison living up the gulch with his beautiful wife. Oregon's real purpose emerges when he seeks out Neville North at Jimmy Bower's hotel, concerned about protecting the young man. At Billy's Bower saloon, North introduces himself to Solid Sam (Ryan) and his associates, presenting himself as confident and unimpressed, ordering whiskey while trading casual remarks about averages and character. The narrative emphasizes frontier social hierarchies and introduces complications around North's presence and uncertain intentions.
