About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams (October 17, 1888) features "Yank Yellowbird's Great Discovery" by W. H. Manning, a western melodrama set in the Montana mining town of Starvation City. When a mysterious young woman named Zoe Rochester falls gravely ill, Mollie Dixon, a schoolteacher, suspects poisoning by Madame Granville, a French woman boarding in the same house. Mollie appeals to a weathered mountaineer known as "Nevermiss" Yank Yellowbird for help. The mountaineer—a veteran of numerous frontier conflicts, unimpressed by conventional authority—agrees to assist. Mollie confronts the increasingly unresponsive Zoe, while Madame Granville hovers protectively, arousing further suspicion. The narrative emphasizes Zoe's deteriorating mental state, her brother Ames Rochester's apparent collusion with Madame Granville, and the miners' indifference to her plight, making Yank and Mollie her only potential saviors.
