About this issue

This issue features "Yank Yellowbird's Black Hills Colony," a serialized western novel by W. H. Manning. The narrative opens with Lieutenant Edmund Burkleigh and twenty deserting U.S. soldiers encountering a Sioux war party on the prairie. Burkleigh, adopting the outlaw alias "Lieutenant Nolaw," arranges an alliance with Chief Storm-Cloud by pledging deserters' loyalty against the Army. Burkleigh secures two female captives from the chief by trading horses and blankets. The deserters establish a hidden settlement in a remote mountain valley as their refuge from military pursuit. Burkleigh addresses his men, declaring their new lawless existence and rechristening himself, forbidding use of his former name. The narrative emphasizes frontier conflict, outlaw camaraderie, and the provisioning of a hidden colony. Female captives remain under guard, their fate unresolved.
