This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (February 22, 1888) features "Sunshine Sam, A Chip of the Old Block," by Capt. Howard Holmes, author of the Captain Coldgrip series. The detective story follows Sunshine Sam (Barnett Brooks), a protégé of the famous sleuth Captain Coldgrip, as he investigates a mystery in San Francisco. Receiving a telegram that Coldgrip cannot join him, Sam attends a lavish party hosted by millionaire ex-banker Mark Talbot at his mansion. There Sam observes Talbot secretly meeting with a Native American man named Red Cloud. Eavesdropping, Sam witnesses Talbot pressing Red Cloud to guide an expedition called "the Silent Six" to locate "the lost city" in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Red Cloud demands payment: Medora, Talbot's ward and the beautiful woman everyone admires. Talbot recoils at the demand but admits needing the secret location Red Cloud possesses.
