About this issue

This issue features "Griplock in a New Role," authored by Jackson Knox (pen name of Old Hawke), who writes detective and adventure serials. The story establishes Tom "Griplock" Crimmins as a young detective newly assigned to guard Vanderpoer & Co.'s circus. Crimmins must apprehend Conrad Leomeister, a renowned lion-tamer and wrestler suspected of theft, in a struggle-filled confrontation. After subduing Leomeister through wrestling technique, Crimmins earns his detective badge. However, an African lion named Othmar escapes his cage and traps Zelda Vanderpoer, the show's star performer. The imprisoned Leomeister attempts extortion, demanding Zelda as wife in exchange for recaging the beast. Crimmins instead confronts the lion directly, wielding a steel-studded whip and employing hypnotic "terrible eyes" to subdue and control the animal, leading it back toward its cage while demonstrating unexpected animal-taming prowess beyond detective work.
