The tale opens with an unnamed elderly hunter observing two white fugitives—Perry Abbot and Don Luis de Byrd—pursued across the desert by Kiowa warriors. From his rocky vantage point, the hunter intervenes dramatically, using his rifle and revolver with exceptional accuracy to kill or scatter the attackers and save the fugitives. After the skirmish, the hunter assists the men in obtaining horses from the dead Indians' ponies. When Abbot requests his name, the hunter reveals himself as "Old Bull's-Eye" or "Lightning Shot," famous for his shooting prowess. He demonstrates his skill by shooting two spinning Spanish dollars from the air. The hunter explains his unusual name through a convoluted family history involving twin brothers and marriage complications. The narrative emphasizes frontier combat, marksmanship, and the hunter's reputation as an accomplished gunfighter.
