About this issue

This issue of Beadle & Adams' weekly (October 27, 1886) features the opening chapters of "The Sea Siren; or, The Fugitive Privateer," a nautical romance by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The story follows Sibyl, the eighteen-year-old daughter of merchant brig captain Norman Hurst, who takes command of the Mermaid during a storm when her father is wounded by cannon fire from a pursuing schooner. The pursuer is revealed to be the Sea Torch, commanded by the notorious pirate Bianca the Buccaneer—who turns out to be Norman's estranged younger brother, embittered over inheritance disputes. After the brig's foremast is destroyed and escape becomes impossible, the pirate boards the vessel. The narrative emphasizes Sibyl's courage, seamanship, and resolve as she maintains the helm under fire, while establishing the family conflict driving the plot.
