About this issue

This serial by Jos. E. Badger, Jr., inaugurates a Western adventure about Detective Dan Brown of Denver, who has seemingly retired from his profession to operate the "Single Pot" (now called "Fairview") cattle ranch with his wife Rachel and two children, Willie and Cherry. After a year of domestic peace, Brown is called away on detective work, and a trail of crime coils back toward his happy home. Three mysterious horsemen—the dapper gambler "Aces-and" (Asa Sand), the refined dandy "Johnny-jump-up" (John Sand), and the giant "Johnny's Infant" (Darius Throop)—arrive at the ranch while Brown is absent. They deceive the household staff and confront Mrs. Brown, claiming to carry a message from her husband. Their cryptic remarks and grave demeanor alarm Rachel, who senses impending danger and demands they reveal what has befallen Dan Brown.
