About this issue

This issue of Ocean Guerrillas (June 10, 1885) contains "The Planter Midshipman," a serialized romance by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham set in eighteenth-century Louisiana. The narrative follows a beautiful woman—captain of smuggler vessels—held prisoner aboard a lugger yacht by a young planter midshipman after he has defeated her father, the "Smuggler King," and scattered his pirate fleet. Though he releases her unharmed, she vows vengeance. She escapes a carriage accident that kills her driver, encounters Chincopin, a Native American ally, who reveals that an escape vessel under Lieutenant Argylle awaits in a lagoon. The woman adopts the alias "Señora Rita" and visits a New Orleans money-lender's shop, seeking gold for unknown purposes. The narrative combines maritime adventure, smuggling operations, and themes of revenge against the backdrop of Gulf Coast waters and colonial New Orleans society.
