Beadle's Dime Library, Vol. II, No. 98 "The Idyl of White Pine" by Albert W. Aiken presents a Western serial in two opening chapters. A stagecoach traveling from Austin to Spur City carries an overland express, Judge Ephraim Jones (a mining camp merchant), Irish passenger Patsy Doolin, elderly New York lawyer Salmon Rennet, and a young heiress named Bernice Gwyne. Twenty years prior, Bernice's cousin Patrick stabbed a man in self-defense during a drunken gaming-house brawl and fled westward; now disinherited by their uncle, Bernice seeks him in the mining regions, refusing her inheritance until locating him alive or dead. Near Kennedy's Ranch, notorious road-agent Overland Kit and two masked accomplices intercept the coach and demand valuables. Kit, identified by his black beard, brown horse with white feet, and blazed forehead, fires a warning shot. The narrative balances romantic backstory with immediate action and frontier atmosphere.
