About this issue

This issue contains "Silver-Plated Sol, the Montana Rover; or, Giant Dave's Fight With Himself" by Captain Mark Wilton, a Western adventure serial. The narrative opens in Red Summit, Montana Territory, where the protagonist Sol Colton discovers his acquaintance Roger Hillard mortally wounded in his cabin. Before dying, Hillard describes being attacked by an unknown man and woman who stabbed him repeatedly without explanation—he had no enemies, nothing worth stealing, and cannot identify his assailants. Sol vows to track them down and bring them to justice through law rather than frontier revenge. The story then shifts to nearby Bowlder Bar, where postmaster Joseph Danforth is approached by gambler Luke Burbank, who demands Joseph help him win the hand of Joseph's reluctant sister Ettala, threatening marriage "whether she is willing or not." The serial combines frontier mystery and romantic conflict elements typical of the pulp Western genre.
