About this issue

This issue of Beadle & Adams' Half-Dime Library (August 6, 1884) features "Faro Saul, the Handsome Hercules; or, The Grip of Steel" by Joseph E. Badger Jr., a Western adventure serial. The opening chapter introduces three stagecoach passengers traveling from Upper Ten to the mining town of Good Enough: Miss Stella Timberlake, a young, attractive woman traveling to meet her brother Harold; Milo Vincent, a handsome mine foreman employed by capitalist Marcus Tudor; and Epaphroditus Weatherwax, a weathered, armed old man who claims to hunt road-agents. Vincent and Stella flirt during the journey while Weatherwax makes cryptic, boastful comments about his violent profession. Vincent reveals that Good Enough has a mysterious masked female faro dealer called "Queen Titania," who resembles Stella physically. The narrative establishes Western frontier themes: mining operations, bandits, gambling, and violence, while developing romantic and mysterious tensions among the characters.
