About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Half Dime Library (Vol. XXIII, No. 998, July 9, 1884) contains the serial "Logger Lem: Or, Life and Peril in the Pine Woods" by Edward Willett, running across two chapters. Chapter I establishes the backstory: John Crawford's infant daughter Maud was kidnapped years ago by a rejected suitor named Charles Carinford; Crawford later adopted the orphaned boy Lem from a police station. Now adult Lem learns Carinford may be alive in Maine's logging region and resolves to find both the man and possibly his missing sister. Chapter II follows Lem journeying to a logging camp via snowshoe through winter forests, where he encounters a large, fierce wild cat-like creature. A young woman appears and assists him in combat against the beast, shooting it multiple times before the heavily-wounded animal turns its attention back to Lem.
