About this issue

This issue of Beadle & Adams' dime novel features "Colorado Rube, The Strong Arm of Hotspur City; or, The Giant Brothers of Buzzard's Roost" by William H. Manning. The frontier melodrama concerns Colorado Rube Ralston, a young miner who married Mona Buzzard despite her four giant brothers' violent opposition. When the brothers discover they were deceived into voting for Mayor Mumford—believing it would oppose Rube, who actually becomes the mayor's clerk and practical power—they vow revenge. Led by eldest brother Bill, the four brothers plot to assassinate Mumford and Rube during the inauguration ceremony. Youngest brother Dave insists their sister be spared. Meanwhile, Rube—described as handsome, twenty-six, and possessing iron will—supper with his wife and her cousin Zetta Willis. Mona harbors dark premonitions about her brothers' response to her husband's ascendant political position.
