About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (Vol. XIX, No. 21) features "Spitfire Saul, King of the Rustlers; or, Queen Dixie's Grand Round-Up" by Jos. E. Badger, Jr., a western serial. Chapter II opens with Saul imprisoned and chained in an adobe room, guarded by Doc Strader. Strader, an honest man bent on justice for his younger brother's death, informs the captive that a lynch mob plans to hang him before sunset. Saul, a charismatic outlaw and cattle thief, attempts to manipulate Strader into providing a weapon, appealing to notions of fair play. Strader reveals his personal vendetta: Saul had killed his young brother during a gunfight, then hanged him cruelly. When Saul callously remarks the boy would have made a good rustler, Strader nearly shoots him but restrains himself, determined the mob will execute Saul by rope as promised.
