About this issue

This serialized adventure tale, "Nattie of the Lake Shore" by Dr. J. H. Robinson, follows Bernard Ross, a young gold prospector caught in a violent storm near Lake Superior. Seeking shelter in a remote miner's hut, Ross discovers the inhabitants—Ralph Quimby, Nat Stratton, and others—are dangerous criminals. A beautiful young girl warns him the miners plan to rob and kill him; beneath the bed lies a murdered man. When Stratton attacks Ross with a stone hammer, Ross fires his revolver in self-defense. A chaotic fight erupts in darkness as Quimby extinguishes the fire. Ross carries the mysterious girl to safety as a bowie-knife flashes overhead. The narrative combines frontier action with gothic suspense, centering on gold claims, frontier violence, and an imperiled heroine.
