About this issue

This October 1882 issue of the weekly serial publication features "One Eye, the Cannoneer; or, Marshal Ney's Last Legacy" by Captain Frederick Whittaker, a historical adventure story set during the restoration period after Napoleon's defeat. The narrative opens in 1815 at the Luxembourg Palace gardens in Paris, where young Lieutenant Albert Delmont commands a firing squad composed of veterans from Napoleon's Old Guard. They are ordered to execute Marshal Ney, the celebrated military commander who had remained loyal to the fallen emperor. Before his execution, Ney entrusts Delmont with a secret mission and cryptic instructions involving a one-eyed man named Martin, directing him to a treasure meant to fund an expedition to rescue Napoleon from his island exile at St. Helena. After Ney's execution, Delmont seeks out the one-eyed man in the Faubourg St. Antoine district, beginning what promises to be a rescue adventure.
