About this issue

This pulp serial installment, "Don Sombrero, the California Road Gent; or, The Three Men of Mount Tabor" by Captain Mark Wilton, presents a frontier adventure featuring pursuit and danger. A mysterious well-armed traveler, referred to as "the judge," journeys toward Mount Tabor carrying substantial funds. At a wayside hotel, an eavesdropper discovers that the outlaw leader San Antonio plans to ambush and rob the judge. A stranger intercepts the judge to warn him of danger. When San Antonio's gang appears, the fugitives charge through the roadblock; the judge's horse bolts into the woods with his companion following. As armed pursuers close in, the two men hide in dense thickets, allowing the outlaws to pass in darkness. The narrative balances exposition with action sequences—gunfire, horseback chases, and armed confrontation—establishing the conflict between the judge's party and Antonio's gang amid California's wild terrain.
